Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has implemented stringent security protocols statewide to ensure the peaceful observance of Hanuman Jayanti, Maha Bishuba Sankranti, the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, and the Odia New Year, all coinciding on the same day this Monday.
Despite the heightened security, police have pinpointed nine areas as particularly vulnerable, as stated by Additional DGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar following a high-level review meeting led by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, with participation from DGP YB Khurania and Additional Chief Secretary for Home, Satyabrata Sahu.
"A total of 200 platoons, each consisting of 30 personnel, along with 10 companies of central armed police forces, including three companies of the Rapid Action Force, have been deployed throughout the state, focusing on critical locations. Additionally, 650 CCTV cameras and 40 AI-enabled drone cameras have been set up," Kumar reported.
Special measures have been taken for Sambalpur, a town that experienced communal unrest during Hanuman Jayanti in 2023.
"In Sambalpur, at least 50 platoons and a sufficient number of CAPF personnel have been stationed. Drones are actively monitoring the area," the officer added.
Kumar mentioned that regular flag marches are being conducted in sensitive regions to foster a sense of security among residents. Plainclothes officers and mobile units are also deployed for discreet on-ground surveillance.
Modern control rooms have been established to coordinate operations and ensure rapid responses to emergencies.
During the review meeting with district collectors, SPs, and police range officers, the chief secretary and DGP emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony across all areas.
Executive magistrates will be present in sensitive zones to oversee law and order.
"Officials have been instructed to monitor social media closely, identify potential troublemakers, and discourage the public from believing in rumors," Kumar noted, adding that a dedicated cyber monitoring team has been formed to oversee social media activity and prevent misinformation.
Furthermore, district collectors have received specific directives to prepare for potential 'Kalabaisakha' (thunderstorm) and heat wave conditions during the festivities on Monday.
